Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in private and alter with participation of government officials during the one-day visit of Turkish Premier to Azerbaijan on August 20. The sides discussed relations between the two countries, situation in the South Caucasus, security of joint project as well as idea of establishment of a Caucasus Union, made by Turkey at the meetings. After, the President and the Prime Minister made a joint statement. The President of Azerbaijan noted that the relations were successfully developing between the two countries.

Turkey-Azerbaijan factor ensures peace and tranquility in the region: “Turkey-Azerbaijan friendship contributes to the relations between the countries. Our will has paved the way for the implementation of wide-scale energy and transport projects”.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted that Azerbaijan and Turkey had the same position from the standpoint of maintenance of peace in the South Caucasus.

“Daqliq Qarabaq conflict must be resolved only within the framework of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and on the basis of international legal norms. Minsk Group’s activity has not yielded any results for 16 years and we are very concerned about it. Caucasus Peace and Cooperation Platform can make a contribution to peace in the region.” 

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev also took stance on the developments in Georgia. President Ilham Aliyev said in his joint statement with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Azerbaijan wanted the life in Georgia to be normal again.

“We want the confrontation to stop. Georgia and Russia are Azerbaijan’s friends. We want our friends to be friends too. The recent happenings proved once more how delicate the stability in the region is,” he said.

Underlining the importance of stability for the implementation of joint projects in the region Ilham Aliyev notes that Azerbaijan recognizes territorial integrity of all countries and wants the conflict to be solved peacefully.
