Event / 15.11.2008 12:27 Flood danger rises as Armenians release more water into the river
The level of water in Tartarchay River has significantly increased and flow in the river reached 40 cubic meters per second.
Residents of Barda region of Azerbaijan are facing with potential flood danger. ANS PRESS informs referring to region’s Emergency Situations Commission that water level in the river has increased significantly and the stream in the river reached 40 cubic meters per second. As a result, water is reported to have washed off 15 meters of riverbank. ANS PRESS`s local correspondent reports that the cause of the rising water level is connected to increasing amount of water discharged from Armenian side. The rising water level has also created a potential threat to Barda-Tartar Highway. Barda Region Executive Power, however, urged that they had shifted the riverbed about 15 meters. Local Emergency Situations Commission is also said to have started to take adequate measures in order to prevent the river to overflow. Parts of riverside that causes potential threats were subject to bank consolidation works. There are four bridges on Tartarchay in the region. Local authorities urge that they are not likely to subject to any threat. According to them, The Ministry of Emergency Situations, Ministry of Transportation as well as State Reclamation and Water Office were informed about the incident. Armenians, who were reported to clear the silt accumulated over the years at the Azerbaijani Sarsang Water Reservoir, occupied by Armenian Forces in the last three months, have released a considerable amount of water rich in toxic substances from the reservoir.
