Point of View / 05.09.2008 18:00 Rasim Musabeyov: "Gul's visit to Armenia is symbolic"
Azerbaijani political scientists commented on Turkish President's visit to Armenia.
Turkish President will pay a visit to Armenia on September 6 to see Armenia-Turkey football match within frame of World Cup qualifiers. Abdullah Gul will stay in Armenia for only few hours and return to Ankara just after the match. Ankara's positive answer to Sargsyan's invitation wasn't commmented unequivocally. Azerbaijani political scientists also commented on this occassion. Political scientist Rasim Musabeyov told ANS PRESS that he expects nothing from Gul's visit to Yerevan: "This is a symbolic visit. Turkey wants to demonstrate that it doesn't keep spite, and is ready to solve the problem via dialogue." The scientist says those who think diplomatic ties will be built between two countries after the meeting are mistaken. Musabeyov noted that Gul's visit is a signal to taking up the talks to a higher level. "Up to now Turkey-Armenia dialogue was conducted at foreign ministers level, whereas now it can step up to presidents level. In any case, these issues are government's action, not that of the state," he said. The scientist says if the talks are continued between states at presidents level, Turkey-Armenia borders may be opened. Another political scientist Zardust Alizadeh noted that he expects much from Gul's visit to Armenia. "It's for the first time that Turkish president pays a visit to Armenia. Turkey-Armenia ties were very tense, there were no diplomatic ties." Alizadeh doesn't rule out possibility of achievement of common opinion between leaders of two states. Political scientist Rasim Agayev said that Turkish president's visit to Azerbaijan promises nothing good for Azerbaijan. He considers that this visit will lead to intensification of minimum trade operations between Turkey and Armenia at first, and laterit will convert to establishment of wider economic and cultural relations./ANS PRESS/
