Politic / 27.08.2008 17:16 “Russia’s recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia will not affect its position on Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity”
Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasiliy Istratov said.
"Russia’s recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia will not effect on its respect to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity”, Russian Ambassador, Vasiliy Istratov told ANS TV. He said Russia supports territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. “Russian Federation recognized independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia on August 16. The recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as the independent states is difficult, constrained, but the only possible decision in this situation. This decision arose from the concrete situation related to the Georgian military operation against South Ossetia began on August 8. At the same time there is no change in Russia’s position on recognition of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. The declaration signed between President Dmitriy Medvedev and President Ilham Aliyev in July will not lose its force in any case. We shall live in another situation. We have to be accustomed to this situation. But I state once more that Russia’s recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia will not affect its relations with Azerbaijan”.
