Event / 20.08.2008 23:51 Turkey approves transit of two US ships into the Black Sea
It will be the first US humanitarian mission via the sea to Georgia since the conflict began.
The US State Department said Turkey had approved the transit of two US Navy ships carrying such assistance into the Black Sea. "Turkey has approved three ships for transit into the Black Sea to transport human relief supplies to Georgia -- that will consist of two US Navy ships and a US Coast Guard cutter," department spokesman Robert Wood said. The ships, whose travel schedules were not immediately available, are to deliver thousands of blankets, hygiene kits, baby food and infant care supplies, he said. It will be the first US humanitarian mission via the sea to Georgia since the conflict began between Georgia and Russia over Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia.
